    Information Guide

    What is GST?

Goods Service Tax (GST) is an Indirect Tax that came into effect from 01st July 2017 (In Parliament GST Act is passed on 29th March 2017). Many tax laws have been replaced that previously existed in India. Now, GST is a one indirect tax for the whole country. The GST law in India is multi-stage, destination-based tax, value addition.Under the GST regime, the GST is chargeable at every point of sale (i.e., at every added value). Intra-state sales are chargeable to CGST & SGST, Inter-state sales are chargeable to IGST.

    Multi-Stage

There are multiple stages that a product goes through along its supply chain, from manufacture to final sale to the ultimate buyer. Let us consider the following case:

    • Purchase of raw materials
    • Production or manufacture
    • Warehousing of finished goods
    • Sale to wholesaler
    • Sale of the product to the retailer
    • Sale to the end consumer

GST levied on each stage makes it a multi-stage tax.

    Destination-Based

Consider goods manufactured in Maharashtra and sold to the ultimate consumer in Karnataka. Goods & Service Tax levied at the point of consumption. So, the whole tax proceeds will go to Karnataka and not Maharashtra.

    Value Addition

For an example the producer who produce biscuits buys flour, sugar, and other material. The value increases when the sugar and flour are mixed and baked into biscuits. The manufacturer then sells the biscuits to the warehouse agent where the agent packs large quantities of biscuits and labels them. The agent sells it to the retailer adding value to it. The retailer packages the biscuits in smaller quantities and invests in the marketing of the biscuits that increases their value. GST levy on these value additions, the price is added at each stage to achieve the ultimate sale to the end customer.

What are the advantages of GST?

    • Removing cascading tax effect
    • Higher threshold for registration
    • Composition scheme for small businesses
    • Lesser compliances
    • Online simpler procedure for GST
    • Increased efficiency in Logistics

What are the components of GST?

    • CGST: Collected by the Central Government on an Intra-State sale (Sale within State)
    • SGST: Collected by the State Government on an Intra-State sale (Sale within State)
    • IGST: Collected by the Central Government on an Inter-State sale (Sale between State)
